The inscription to each side carved within burlwood panels is from the Shahada and reads la illah ila allah –“ There is no God but God.” The zitan bowl is delicately incised with a diaper pattern and wan symbols. The base is inscribed with a yi character and the interior is lined in metal.

There do not appear to be other similar zitan and burlwood bowls published, however Arabic-inscribed vessels were popular at court since the Zhengde reign.

An Arabic-inscribed bronze incense garniture comprising a censer, a vase and an incense box with Zhengde marks but probably later in date is illustrated by Liu Xirong, Zhongding mingxiang (3): Rongzhai qinggong zhenshang, Beijing, 2013, pp. 94-95; and another complete set was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 31 May 2017, lot 3176
