This year’s Classic Week series in Paris will feature seven sales, from 2–22 November, each containing lots from the Rothschild family, spanning the French, English and German branches. The Rothschild Masterpieces sales that have just taken place in New York have revealed once again the extent to which this prestigious provenance in the field of painting and the decorative arts still influences the great connoisseurs and collectors of today.
The week opens on 15 November with Old Master Paintings, Sculptures, and Drawings, a sale which brings to light several works that have not been seen for over a century, including Renaud abandonne Armide by Charles Antoine Coypel, which comes from the Rothschild Collection, and once hung in the hôtel Massaran, Paris alongside Rembrandt’s The Standard Bearer. Not to be outdone, the drawings offer a magnificent pastel by Rosalba Carriera, Muse coiffée d’une couronne de lauriers, recently revealed as belonging to the series, of which the other works are held in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The following day, it is the collection of James de Rothschild and his descendants that takes centre stage with Derniers Souvenirs de Ferrières. Collectors and enthusiasts will have the opportunity to acquire 400 works ranging from the 16th to the 20th centuries, including old master drawings and paintings, ceramics and silverware, furniture and works of art, as well as modern and post-war paintings and sculptures. The famous Rothschild taste offers something for everyone!

It is not until the Exceptional sale on 21 November that the three European branches of the Rothschild family are brought together. The English branch stands out with an imposing 17th century carved ivory figure of a man in armour; the German (Frankfurt) branch with a magnificent 16th century Paduan bronze depicting a panther; and finally from the French branch there is an important pair of Louis XVI marble pedestals with sumptuous bronzes by Gouthière.

Following on from this is the sale of rare books and manuscripts on 22 November, in which a part of the Rothschild library will be offered, including a copy of the Code Civil en vers that was once in Napoleon’s own collection. Other erudite treasures with impeccable provenance, such as the Rahir copy of Albrecht Dürer's “Petite Passion” will also go under the hammer. In addition to this, on the occasion of the centenary of the death of the writer Raymond Radiguet and the publication of his masterpiece the Diable au Corps, we offer the autograph manuscript of the very first version.

Three online sales complete this series: Old Masters – Paintings, Drawings and Sculptures will be running from the 2–17 November; Les Greniers de Ferrières from 7–22 November, (and for those interested, the penultimate act of the dispersal of this collection will take place at Drouot on 28 November under the hammer of Maître Giquello: Les communs de Ferrières.) Finally, from 9–22 November, the Bayreuth collection of gold boxes, the first sale of snuffboxes to be held in Paris, finishes the season in glittering style.
