The present sitter was the wife of John Graham (see lot 56). Like her husband, she was painted by Tilly Kettle (1734 - c.1786) in Calcutta, circa 1774-1776 (see M. Archer, India and British Portraiture 1770-1825, London, 1979, p. 88, plate 43).
