LA RESTAURATION DE LA VILLA E-1027 Entre 1926 et 1929, Eileen Gray, designer d'origine irlandaise, et Jean Badovici, architecte d'origine roumaine et rédacteur en chef de la revue L'Architecture Vivante, construisent E-1027 à Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Ils inventent l'une des icônes de l'architecture moderne, rare transposition de l'avant-garde architecturale dans le monde méditerranéen. Abandonnée, squattée puis séparée de ses meubles mythiques avant d'être trop récemment redécouverte et acquise par le Conservatoire du Littoral, elle est classée Monument Historique en 2000 et fait depuis l'objet d'un projet de restauration globale (1). La philosophie du projet de restauration de E-1027 privilégie la recomposition de l'état 1926-1929, date de la publication du numéro spécial de l'Architecture Vivante. Ce projet de restauration est conduit selon une démarche de conservation qui favorise le maintien de la matière originelle altérée, limitant les remplacements par des ouvrages neufs. Le chantier de restauration de ce monument historique est donc un exercice savant d'archéologie et de conservation des savoir-faire des années 1920, l'ossature de béton armé, la paroi de briques creuses, l'enduit de ciment, les menuiseries métalliques... Dans un respect stricte de l'oeuvre originale, des restitutions ponctuelles de dispositions perdues ont été réalisées : la bâche de la grande terrasse a été recomposée à partir de photographies anciennes noir & blanc ne livrant jamais la couleur véritable de cette architecture puriste de tissus. Si le projet privilégie l'oeuvre d'Eileen Gray, il ne néglige pas les interventions postérieures tout aussi remarquables. Les peintures murales que Le Corbusier réalise en 1938-1939 sans l'aval d'Eileen Gray, bouleversant l'équilibre subtil des espaces intérieurs font actuellement l'objet d'une restauration approfondie. L'apport le plus spectaculaire du projet de restauration est sans doute la redécouverte des polychromies perdues d'Eileen Gray. Pour tous, E-1027 affirmait son appartenance au monde méditerranéen, par la 'blancheur' emblématique de la vision moderne, dont témoignent les photographies anciennes en noir & blanc. La couleur semblait réservée aux sols, aux meubles, oubliant les articles de L'Architecture Vivante qui traitaient de la polychromie architecturale. La polychromie oubliée, retrouvée par des sondages stratigraphiques systématiques, est avant tout une intervention globale, destinée à l'ensemble des surfaces extérieures et intérieures pour structurer l'espace. La gamme développée est spectaculairement réduite : blanc et noir, gris et beige, qui se retrouvent dans le mobilier conçu pour la villa (liège, aluminium) et ponctuellement le bleu, le rouge, le vert et le jaune. Les matériaux mis en oeuvre par Eileen Gray pour exprimer ces couleurs sont toujours ordinaires : carreaux de grès crème, ou de terre cuite vernissée et peintures de badigeon, savoir-faire méditerranéen réapproprié par l'avant-garde architecturale. Le projet de restauration est un hommage rendu à l'oeuvre d' Eileen Gray, démontrant la fusion entre le grand paysage méditerranéen, son architecture et son mobilier, unifiés par sa palette colorée. THE RESTORATION OF E-1027 Between 1926 and 1929, Eileen Gray, the Irish designer, and Jean Badovici, an architect of Rumanian origin, editor of the journal 'L'Architecture Vivante', built E-1027 at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. They conceived one of the icons of modern architecture, a rare manifestation of the avant-garde on the Mediterranean shore. Abandoned to the elements, degraded by squatters and stripped of its legendary furniture, the significance of the structure was eventually acknowledged, with its acquisition by the Conservatoire du Littoral, its listing in 2000 as a Historic Monument and the subsequent internationally-supported restoration project.(a.) The guiding principle of the restoration of E-1027 was the return to its original state at the completion of its construction betwen 1926 and 1929, the date of its publication in a dedicated isue of 'L'Architecture Vivante'. Every effort is being made in the conservation process to preserve original elements with only the most limited incorporation of replacements. The site thus has the character of an archaeological programme that demands an appreciation of the building techniques of the '20s in such aspects as the re-enforced concrete structure, the walls of hollow bricks, the cement rendering and the metal fittings. Missing details have been recreated with the strictest respect for appropriate methodologies. The canvas terrace canopy has been reconstructed from black and white photographs that cannot render the true colour of this purist architectural application of fabric. While the project gives priority to Eileen Gray's ideas it takes account also of certain remarkable later additions. The murals painted by Le Corbusier in 1938-39, without the approval of Eilen Gray, which dramatically impact the subtle articulation of the interior spaces are currently the focus of a detailed conservation plan. The most spectacular aspect of the restoration is surely the rediscovery of Eileen Gray's use of colour. The general perception of E-1027, and one re-enforced by our knowledge of it through black and white photographs, is of a building that asserts its connection with a Mediterranean tradition througha brilliant whiteness, also emblematic of Modernism. It seemed that colour was reserved for floor coverings and furniture, with no reference to the discussion of colour in architecture as published in 'L'Architecture Vivante'. This forgotten colour, rediscoved by systematic examination through the strata, is an overall feature of the architectural concept, used throughout on exterior and interior walls to define spaces. The palette is very limited, comprising black and white, grey and beige, tints repeated within the furniture designed specifically for the house, using such materials as cork and aluminium; and these are punctuated with blue, red, green and yellow. Eileen Gray used commonplace materials to add counterpoints of colour, glazed stoneware or varnished terracotta tiles, rough and ready washes of paint, a whole Mediterranean craft know-how in the service of avant-garde architecture. The restoration project is a homage to Eileen Gray that celebrates the relationship of the slendid Meditteranean landscape with her architecture and furnishings, consolidated through her sensibility as a colourist. An extending work table, with thick cork surface within ivory-white painted wood frame, on nickelled tubular uprights, with one matching extension leaf, by Eileen Gray, for E-1027, circa 1926-1929

Contemporary photographs show this very table in use in the living room or on the terrace of E-1027. Miss Gray applied her ingenuity to developing furniture ideas in metal, experimenting with both tubular steel and slender rods as structural elements. The present table exploits floor-level rods for stability and a trombone-like sliding mechanism to extend the top, allowing it to support a second panel; the cork table top is a simple but effective idea to deaden the sound of cutlery and crockery.

The design for this table is one of five furniture designs published within the portfolio 'E-1027 Maison en Bord de Mer' (p. 20).

Des photographies d'époque illustrent notre table dans la salle à manger ou sur la terrasse de E-1027. Eileen Gray emploiera son ingéniosité à développer des idées de mobilier métallique, construisant les structures de ses meubles à partir de tubes et de tringles d'acier. Elle teste ici l'utilisation d'entretoises au niveau du sol pour assurer la stabilité de la table, ainsi qu'un bras coulissant, évoquant la forme d'un trombone, pour supporter l'allonge de la table. Le choix du liège pour sa surface est destiné à assourdir les sons des couverts et de la vaisselle.
