The present work was likely inspired by Heade's fascination and documentation of the tropical terrain he encountered on his many travels. The artist journeyed to Brazil between 1863 and 1865 and made subsequent trips to Nicaragua in 1866 and Colombia, Panama and Jamaica in 1870.
