Dated 1859, the present work may be among Winslow Homer's earliest examples in watercolor, a medium he would not pursue until 1873. This charming scene of four children playing with a toy boat in a trough is seen again in an engraving after Homer, Spring Blossoms, published in the May 21, 1870 edition of Harper's Weekly. The reverse of the watercolor features a related drawing of a child, as well as more casual sketches of a man reclining on grass and a woman that also appear to date to the early years of Homer's career.
