The form of the bodies of this pair of 'candle vases' is virtually identical to a pair of 'vase perfume burners' circa 1772, illustrated in N. Goodison, Matthew Boulton: Ormolu, London, 2002, p. 305, pl. 277, and correspond closely to a sketch in Boulton pattern book I.

A closely related pair of vases was sold from the collection of Lord Brabourne, Christie's, London, 19 November 1992, lot 4 (£10,400 including premium) and again 6 July 1995, lot 10 (£19,550 including premium). Another pair was sold anonymously Christie's, New York, 15 April 2005, lot 208 ($16,800 including premium) and another pair was sold anonymously Christie's, London, 8 June 2006, lot 72 (£22,800 including premium)
