The scene in the central roundel probably depicts Hwang Tao-P'o, a woman of Yai Chow, in Hainan who is said to have taught the people of Central China the art of spinning cotton, having moved to Kiang-nan about the time when the cotton plant was introduced from Turkestan early in the fourteenth century.
