Osborne died in 1847 following a mental breakdown, having the previous year attacked a passenger on a train whilst returning from a shoot with the Marquess of Bute.

The silver mount applied with the Roman numerals XXXIV for the 34th Foot above the battle honour PENINSULA within a wreath, a foliate band around rim and terminating in a thistle mount at other end, with rake, spike, snuff spoon and mallet each dependent from chains, cover inscribed inside Presented by Captn. Osborne Markham to his Brother Officers, 34th. Regt., 1838, gilt interior
