Lot Essay

The present watercolour is a larger version of another Varley watercolour on the back of which were inscribed the following lines:
'The Curfew - drawn by John Varley
Oft on a plat of rising ground,
I hear the far-off curfew's [sic] sound,
Over some wide-water'd shore,
Swinging low with sullen roar -'
Milton's Il Pensoroso
