Large oblong oval box, the cover with an oval central reserve chased with a love declaration, flanked by two side reserves chased with young couples in love, enamelled in translucent green, the laurel border enamelled in tranlucent russet, the sides and base similarly bordered, the four side reserves and the base enamelled in translucent green on an engraved scalework ground, the base with a swirling rosette, the side reserves applied with laurel swags and bows, the dividing side gold panels chased with herms

Mathieu Coiny (1723 - after 1788), son of a master goldsmith at Versailles, struck his mark in Paris in 1755, his father acting as sponsor. Appointed Bijoutier Ordinaire des Princes in 1767, Coiny became an official of the Guild in 1771/1772.
Works by this eminent goldsmith are in the Louvre, the Wallace Collection, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée de l'Horlogerie et de l'Emaillerie, Geneva.
