Charles-Nicolas Dodin (1734-1803) worked for the Sèvres porcelain factory 1754-1802 and specialised in plaques as the present one. He participated in the decoration of Tsarina Katharina II of Russia's great Porcelain Service (1778-1779).
Rosalind Savill (The Wallace Collection - Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, III, pp. 1029-1032 gives further information of Dodin and mentions a porcelain box signed and dated as the present one and painted with the same subject, described in a letter of 1961 to Sir Francis Watson. For an identical representation of Telemachus and Calypso and its iconographic source, see lot 56.
