Château Palmer
Cantenac (Margaux), 3me cru classé
--Vintage 1978magnum (1)
"A lovely wine and a very good 1978. Many notes, seven during the course of the last decade. Seductively rich, ripe, mulberry-like fruit; full, soft and fleshy in its early days. To the extent that I thought that (in 1985) it could not possibly get any better. Apart from an odd 'drying out' note, proving a fascinating companion to the '78 Sassicaia and Cheval Blanc at Hugh Johnson's (in 1997) rather vegetal, Merlot-like, distinctive, touch of, liquorice, needs drinking. Fully mature, delicious but fading and slightly raw by lunch (1999). Most recently, sweet, attractive, quite good length and risidual tannin and acidity." Otherwise a point. Last noted at the Ch Palmer dinner at Ransome's Dock in London, Feb 2001 **** Best to drink soon MB Vintage Wine
--Vintage 1979magnum (1)
"Continuing its run of well above average wines. Half a dozen consistent notes from the mid-1980s: glorious colour; fleshy ripe fruitiness on both nose and - for a '79 - on palate. Endorsed by my most recent note though its tannin now laid bare - a lean, attenuated, spicy, teeth-gripping finish. Good length. Needs food." Last noted at the 'exponential' (I keep having to look this word up) tasting in New York, Dec 1998 *** MB, Vintage Wine

"One of the best '80s***" MB, Vintage Wine
--Vintage 1981magnum (1)
"Most recently, fully mature in appearance, nose and taste. A touch of amber orange at its rim. Some sweetness, rich... Last tasted lunching at the château, May 2001 **** but should be drunk soon." MB, Vintage Wine
--Vintage 1982magnum (1)
"The 1982 has become more delineated and put on weight. [It] is a juicy, complex, Pomerol-inspired effort with abundant black cherry and black currant fruit presented in a medium to full-bodied, plump, straightforward style. Fleshy, fresh, and lively, it should be consumed over the next 7-10 years." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #129 (June 2000)
--Vintage 1983magnum (1)
"One of the superb wines of the vintage, the 1983 Palmer continues to display a saturated purple/garnet color, and an intense perfume of jammy black fruits, smoked meats, flowers, cedar, and Asian spices. Super-concentrated, powerful, and full-bodied, this huge, unctuously textured wine is approaching its plateau of maturity. Because of the high Merlot content it can easily be drunk now, yet promises to last for another 20-25 years. I remain convinced that the 1983 will be the most powerful Palmer since the compelling 1961. Last tasted 9/97" Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd ed. (1998)
