A STACKING SET OF LACQUERED-WOOD WRITING BOXES (KASANESUZURIBAKO) meiji period (late 19th century)
Each of rectangular shape stacked in two sets of five tiers on a square base supported by four bracket feet, also enclosed by a square frame pierced with shaped rectangular panels through which the stacked writing boxes are visible, the writing boxes of rosewood decorated in gold lacquer in low relief with a continuous design of flowers of the four seasons, the top of the frame lacquered with peonies and a branch of plum, each of the writing boxes lacquered in mura-nashiji, fitted with a rectangular inkstone and with a gilt-metal mizuire each engraved with a different seasonal plant, the undersides of the flat covers of the top two boxes lacquered with swallows and sparrows--each writing box 8 x 3 5/8 x ¾in. (20.2 x 9.3 x 2.2cm.); boxes in frame and stacked on base 8¾ x 7 5/8 x 6 1/8in. (21.5 x 19.6 x 15.7cm.)
