meiji period (late 19th century), inscribed ogata korin and sealed rin

Of rectangular shape with rounded corners applied on the sides with copper cord rings, the exterior covered by woven rattan lacquered in gold in high relief with a stand of iris, four of the petals and two leaves inlaid in large pieces of mother-of-pearl and two leaves inlaid in lead, the rims of the cover and lower box black lacquer and with a band of scrolling foliage in gold hiramaki-e which surrounds the perimeter; the underside of the lid also inlaid in lead and mother-of-pearl and lacquered in gold with a boat, burning lantern, water reeds and rippling water on a roiro ground, the cormorant, of mother-of-pearl and gold lacquer, is opposite on the lower section of the box on a matching black ground, inscribed on the base in thick, raised gold lacquer as above--10 1/8 x 9 x 2¾in. (25.5 x 22.8 x 7cm.)
