Both the present seau à demi-bouteille ordinaire and that in the following lot can be confirmed as from the service presented by the French government to Henry of Prussia in 1784. The gift would appear to have been assembled from stock green-ground wares dating from 1782-1784 with some variation within the decoration, particularly the gilding patterns, although all pieces are painted with fruit and flowers.

The present cooler would appear to be that noted in the Artist's Ledgers under Pierre jeune on 30 March 1782, described as fond verd - fleurs et fuits and again in the kiln records for 30 June of the following year as fond verd Groupes with Pierre jeune noted as the painter and Chauv(aux) L(aîné) as the gilder.

Our thanks to David Peters for his assitance with this research.

Jean-Jacques Pierre le jeune is recorded as a painter of flowers and patterns and as a gilder at the factory from 1763 to 1800.

Michel-Barnabé Chauvaux l'aîné is recorded as a gilder at the factory from 1752 to 1788.

Jean Chauvaux le jeune is recorded as a gilder and painter of patterns at the factory from 1764 to 1800.
