Oval box, the centre of the cover inset with an oval enamel plaque painted with a girl gardening, within a chased gold frame, the base with a boy playing the flute, the lid and base borders enamelled in translucent blue and green over engraved foliage sprays between chased gold florettes, and the sides also with similar panels over musical trophies

Jean-Joseph Barrière (fl. 1763-1793) stuck his mark in 1763 and was sponsored by Henri Delobel (see lot 108). Other fine gold boxes by Barrière are to be found in the Louvre, the Wallace Collection, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
