In the 1820s and 1830s, the Zulu clan, one of the Nguni ethnic groups, established a powerful kingdom, which included the South African province of Natal. After prolonged fighting of this new Zulu nation against white settlers, Natal was annexed by Great Britain in 1843. In 1887, the English also assumed control of Zululand, which became part of Natal ten years later.
