Most of the Xhosa lived primarily in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Their patrilineal clans were headed by a tribal chief, who ruled with the aid of a council. During the late 18th and 19th centuries, they were engaged in a series of conflicts against the European settlers. Eventually, their territories were annexed by the Cape Colony.
