A SANCAI-GLAZED BUFF POTTERY FIGURE OF AN EARTH SPIRIT

Shown seated on its rear haunches with front legs stiffly braced atop the pierced rockwork base, the chest, wings and flared striated mane all splash-glazed in green, amber and cream while the back and rear haunches are glazed amber, the leonine face modeled with fierce expression and mouth open in a warning roar below a pair of horns flanking an unglazed flame-form crest bearing traces of orangy-red pigment

This earth spirit is similar to the figure excavated from the tomb of Crown Prince Zhong Huai and his wife, in Shaanxi province, dated to about 710 A.D. illustrated in Wenwu, 1972:7, p. 20, fig. 12. Compare, also, figures similar in modeling and glaze application in the Eumorfopolous Collection, illustrated by R. L. Hobson in the Catalogue, vol. I, London, 1925, no. 274, pl. XXXVIII
