unmarked, circa 1850, the fitments possibly Swiss, retailed by C.F. Hancock
Comprising,
The lower fitted drawer,
A pair of gold-mounted scent bottles, the mounts pierced with trelliswork and with detachable cover, 1.1/8in. (2.5cm.) long
A pearl-set thimble, ¾in. (2cm.) high
A tape-measure engraved with scrolling foliage, 1¼in. (3cm.) diam.
A pin cushion similarly engraved, ¾in. (2cm.)
A bodkin
A corkscrew with steel worm, in two parts, 2in. (5cm.) long
An engraved ruler, 4in. (10cm.) long
A ring with chalcedony matrix engraved with cypher
The upper drawer,
Two pairs of scissors with steel blades and gold handle and sheath, set with pearls and garnets, one 3¼in. (8cm.), the other 4in. (10cm.)
A needle case with crochet hook, 5in. (12.5cm.) long
A knife with steel blade, with garnet and pearl engraved sheath, 4½in. (9cm.)
An awl with similar handle, 3¾in. (9cm.) long
A button hook, 3in. (7.5cm.) long
A needle case with pearl and garnet set terminal chased with bird's head, 3¼in. (8.2cm.) long
A pencil, 3.5/8in. (9.2cm.) long
All in a silver-gilt mounted red velvet case, the mounts pierced and engraved with foliate strapwork, the lining printed 'C.F. HANCOCK, A SUCCESSOR OF STORR & MORTIMER, JEWELLERS & SILVERSMITHS TO THE QUEEN ADELAIDE AND HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY THE EMPEROR OF RUSSIA, 39 BRUTON STREET', and with a detached silver-gilt plaque engraved 'DRESSING CASE GOLD FITTINGS DESIGNED BY THE DUKE OF PORTLAND, MADE FOR THE COUNTESS OF CORK & ORRERY'
