The these tureens are modelled on a pair of Russian tureens with French stands. The tureens, by Berthold Christian Schelepper, St. Petersburg, 1774 and stands by Antoine Boullier, Paris 1780, were originally commissioned by Catherine the Great of Russia. They entered the Royal collection of Mecklenburg and Schwerin, perhaps through the marriage of Friedrich Franz III to Anastasia, only daughter of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaievitch or Russia, in 1879. They inspired the Schwerin goldsmiths Johann Joost and Heinrich Rose to create the magnificent dinner service which commemorated the marriage of Friedrich Franz III'S son in 1904.
