A Swiss Halberd Of 'Sempach' Type
Mid-17th Century
With short stout tapering spike with tip of stiff diamond section, narrow oblong axe-blade with slightly convex cutting edge, flat triangular fluke struck on one face with the mark of a double fleur-de-lys in a shield, two straps, and original wooden staff of octagonal section branded at the top with the letters 'ZZ' (for Zeughaus Zürich), retaining traces of an old inventory number in red paint, also at the top, and stamped near the bottom with arsenal number '3163'
12½in. (31.8cm.) head
The mark is that of Lamprecht Koller, who supplied over 1000 "Sempacher-halbarten" to the Zürich Arsenal
