Thomas Stearns
En 2019, Le Stanze del Vetro présente Thomas Stearns alla Venini, une rétrospective complète du travail novateur de ce jeune artiste américain chez Venini entre 1960 et 1962. Figure clé de l’histoire du verre, son passage chez Venini a ouvert la voie à d’autres jeunes artistes souhaitant travailler avec les maîtres verriers, tels que Dale Chihuly, Dick Marquis et Toots Zynsky.
Le travail de Stearns chez Venini était singulier, extrêmement expérimental et initialement rejeté par les maîtres verriers plus âgés. Il développe finalement une collaboration avec le plus jeune maître verrier de Venini, Checcho Ongaro, et ensemble ils produisent une série de pièces inspirées qui remportent une médaille d’or à la Biennale de 1962 (retirée par la suite lorsque le jury apprend que Stearns est américain).
Ce travail transforme néanmoins la conception du design verrier, tant pour les ateliers de Murano que pour des générations d’artistes à travers le monde. La plupart des modèles créés par Stearns et Ongaro sont uniques, y compris les rares et remarquables vases Luna et Nebbia Lunare présentés ici, tous deux exposés lors de cette rétrospective.

In 2019, Le Stanze del Vetro presented Thomas Stearns at Venini, a comprehensive retrospective of the young American artist’s precedent setting work at Venini between 1960-1962. Stearns is a pivotal figure in the history of glassmaking, and his time at Venini paved the way for other young artists to study with master blowers at the company, including Dale Chihuly, Dick Marquis and Toots Zinsky.
Stearns’ work at Venini was idiosyncratic, extremely experimental and initially rejected by the older master blowers. Eventually Stearns developed a relationship with Venini’s youngest master blower, Checcho Ongaro, and together they produced a series of inspired vessels which won a gold medal at the Biennale of 1962 (only to be rescinded after the judges learned that Stearns was an American).
This work, however, changed the conception of glass design both for Murano glass houses and for generations of glass artists worldwide. Most of the models created by Stearns and Ongaro are unique, including the rare and wonderful Luna and Nebbia Lunare vases presented here, and both were featured in the Stanze del Vetro exhibition.
