A PLASTER AND WAX SKETCH OF APOLLO FOR THE PALAIS DU LOUVRE, CHARLES-FRANÇOIS NANTEUIL-LEBOEUF, KNOWN AS NANTEUIL (1792–1865)
This plaster sketch is connected to one of the monumental commissions of Charles-François Lebœuf-Nanteuil for the Palais du Louvre. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1817, the sculptor quickly established himself as one of the principal figures of official sculpture under the Restoration and the July Monarchy.
At the same time, the artist received numerous other public commissions in Paris and in the provinces, among them the Apollo for the Cour carrée of the Louvre, of which the present plaster constitutes the preparatory sketch. He also executed, for the decorative programme of the Louvre, allegorical figures for the Cour Napoléon, as well as the statues of Montesquieu and Mathieu Molé for the series of ‘Illustrious Men’. Nanteuil also contributed to other monumental Parisian projects of the first half of the nineteenth century, such as the decoration of the church of La Madeleine, the pediment of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, and the façade of the Gare du Nord.
