DANIEL NIKOLAUS CHODOWIECKI, PORTRAIT OF A PRIEST, POSSIBLY HIS SON, PENCIL, RED CHALK AND BROWN WASH ON TABLETTE PAPER, IN AN INSCRIBED OVAL, SIGNED

Also known as the ‘German Hogarth’, no doubt in reference to his series of engravings for illustration, Chodowiecki, a Berlin academician specializing in small formats and vignettes, also produced numerous portraits. One example is that of the family of Senator and drawing collector Johann Valentin Meyer, featuring a self-portrait of the artist (on the right of the composition), which bears stylistic similarities to this highly accurate profile portrait (Hamburg, Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte; The Golden Age of German Romanticism. Watercolours and Drawings in the Age of Goethe, Paris, Musée de la Vie Romantique, exhib. cat., 2008, no. 9). He is considered by critics to be a major representative of the bourgeois Rococo style of the age of Frederick the Great (ibid., p. 298).

Également appelé le ‘Hogarth allemand’ sans doute en référence à ses séries gravées pour l’illustration, Chodowiecki, cet académicien berlinois, spécialiste du petit format et de la vignette, a également réalisé de nombreux portraits. Citons celui de la Famille du sénateur et collectionneur de dessins Johann Valentin Meyer avec l’autoportrait de l’artiste (à droite de la composition), qui présente des similitudes stylistiques avec le présent portrait de profil, d’une grande précision, conservé à Hambourg, au Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte (L’Âge d’or du romantisme allemand. Aquarelles et dessins à l’époque de Goethe, Paris, musée de la Vie Romantique, cat. exp., 2008, n° 9). Il sera considéré par la fortune critique comme un représentant majeur du style rococo bourgeois de l’époque de Frédéric le Grand (ibib., p. 298).
