The long inscription reads:
Da tang tian bao yuan nian sui ci geng chen san yue ba ri yong qing si yuan jing zao xiang gong yang.
This could be translated as:
'The first year of the Tianbao of the Great Tang, made for the monastery of Yongqing on the eighth day of the third month of the Gengchen year'.
It is interesting to note that according to historical records, the Tianbao Era officially started in 742AD, therefore two years after the Gengchen year, which corresponds to 740AD. This two-year discrepancy may be explained by poor record-keeping by the lapidary that worked on the current lot.
