The present chenets were executed circa 1740-50 after an engraving by André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) illustrated in a recueil published by Mariette circa 1715-20 as 'Nouveaux Deissins de Meubles et ouvrages de Bronze et de Marqueterie Inventés et gravés par André-Charles Boulle' (reproduced here).
Related examples sold at auction include a virtually identical pair sold from the 'Collection de Monsieur et Madame Anton Luigi Laura', Sotheby's, Paris, 27 June 2001, lot 13 (FF305,200 with premium).
