Morrocco comments on his religious topics: 'It is the ritual, and the physical appearance of the ritual as well, that really attracts me. I mean I love going into a church in Italy and sitting there and just watching and looking at these tremendous Baroque altar-pieces and the confessional boxes - and all the kind of paraphernalia of the Catholic Church in operation. I feel a wonder and admiration for the spectacle' (C.Young and V. Keller, Alberto Morrocco 1917-1998, Edinburgh, 2008, p.37).
The theme of the woman leaning out of the window runs through Morrocco's work from the 1950s. Here he has captured an aspect of everyday Italian life which he must have witnessed as he walked with his sketchbook down the streets. From these drawings he re-created the mood, playing with the composition and form to create this work.
