Each finely molded in low relief around the faceted sides with two four-clawed dragons pursuing flaming pearls amidst flames, a three-character inscription in intaglio on one side highlighted in blue pigment reading, wu long ye (liquid of the black dragon), the top molded with a four-character maker's mark, Cheng Zhongyi zhi (made by Cheng Zhongyi)

The inscription on the underside of the box states that the ink sticks were made during the Kangxi period and were of very good quality when Xu tried them.
