AN UNUSUAL CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL CUP STAND
LATE MING/EARLY QING DYNASTY, 16TH/17TH CENTURY
The compressed globular upper receptacle enamelled around the exterior with three archaistic chilong in blue, interspersed with shou roundels between ruyi bands, supported on a hexafoil dish with a lingzhi scroll encircling the bowl and a chilong on each lobe, the underside with a continuous flower scroll and various floral sprays on the edge of each lobe, the spreading foot decorated with rolling waves and pointed rocks amongst ruyi cloud scrolls

Although the present cup stand is published and dated to the second half of the seventeenth century by Sir Harry Garner,(Chinese and Japanese Cloisonné Enamels, London, 1977, pl. 62B), it is highly probable that it may be of a slightly earlier date. Compare with an identical cup stand dated to the late Ming dynasty, illustrated in Metal-bodied Enamel Ware, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2002, pl. 68.
