Engraved with birds, flowers and a lion in a cartouche, stamped initials 'H.S.' above denticulations and indistinct hallmarks to lid, possibly John Donne, the cover with ramshorn thumbpiece and the handle of rare double-scroll type with shield terminal

The tankard is very similar in feel and quality of decoration to the John Donne tankard of James II in the Colonial Williamsburg Museum, No.236, also illustrated Hornsby, Pewter of the Western World, p.259.
Michaelis illustrates another tankard with a lion in British Pewter, p.50.
