The Palaiologan dynasty was the last ruling family of the Romanion, or Byzantine Empire. Michael VIII Palaiologos was its founder and his descendants ruled until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The present bust is believed to depict John V, who ruled (albeit with interruption) from 1332-1391.
