English, circa 1710/1714, the miniature inside by Charles Boit (1662-1727), signed and inscribed on the counter-enamel 'Ætatis suæ 52 C Boit pinx'
Flattened oval plain gold box, the slightly raised cover centred by a scrolling reserve with foliate mirrored initials 'AS' on a matted ground, the inside of the lid lined with a gold panel inset with a finely painted oval enamel miniature of a gentleman with long powdered wig, wearing armour and a white cravat knotted 'à la Steinkirk', within a reeded border, reeded rims, the gold hinge attached with four gold screws
