Incorporating the stag from Cerf frottant ses bois contre un arbre (see lot 70), the doe from Daine couchée (see lots 62-4), and the fawn from Faon de daim, tête levée (see Poletti and Richarme, 2000, no. A144, p. 284), this model was never offered as an individual work, but was edited for use as the central group in one of Barye's final creations, Candelabres décorés de groupes d'animaux (op. cit., no. D10, p. 376). Together with Famille de daim (see lots 54-5) and Famille de cerf (see lots 65-6), this model was one of the principal groups included in lot 718 in the Atelier sale.
