An English japanned longcase clock
The case decorated with gilt chinoiserie against a black ground (decoration refreshed), the flat top hood with brass ball and spire finials, inset columns and glazed side panels, the breakarch trunk door decorated with pagodas and a swan, on stepped base, the 11½in. square brass dial with engraved border and later foliate spandrels to a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with lozenge half quarter hour and fleur-de-lys half hour markers, matted centre with subsidiary seconds ring and ringed winding holes, with engraved doves around the circular date aperture, later brass hands, the probably later applied arch with a silvered convex disc signed John/Smart/London, the four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell; case mid 18th century and associated to dial and movement, first quarter 18th century -- 90½in. (230cm.) high
