The design of this clock is taken directly from Jacques-Louis David's 1784 painting of the same subject which is now in the Louvre. The altar which contains tha actual mechanism is an addition and the angle of the chairs is changed.
Of the few known examples of this model this clock appears to be unique in being entirely ormolu. George, Prince of Wales, purchased one in 1809 for Carlton House, which has a verde antico marble base mounted with figures debating (see: H.Clifford Smith, Buckingham Palace, London, 1931, p.148, no.145). There is another in the Residenz in Munich that is apparently identical to the Buckingham Palace clock (see: H.Ottomeyer & P.Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol.I, p.367, no.5.13.5) A third example signed Galle Rue Vivienne á Paris Thomas H.r was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London. 7 July 1976, lot 9. The latter shared the frieze mount depicting actual defence of the bridge of the Horati with the present clock and is the basis for the attribution of the whole group to Galle. There is a further example in Prin edrik Adolf's anteroom in the Royal Palace in Stockholm that is illustrated in H.Groth, Neoclassicism in the North, London, 1990, p.23, fig.7
