The theme of a lion attacking a bull was prevalent in Antiquity both in sculpture and in coinage. The present group takes its inspiration from these Antique examples, but also from Giambologna's reworking of the subject. It stands apart from both, however, in its attention to naturalistic detail such as the grassy ground, rocks and tree trunk.
