Much of the ornament on this pedestal, designed in the curvaceous 1760's French-Grecian style, relates to a remarkable cabinet designed by Francois Linke, circa 1885 (Sotheby's, London, 27 September 1991, lot 27). The work of Maison Linke at the 1900 Paris Exhibition was praised in Revue Artistique & Industrielle for recreating the elegance and tradition of 18th century French cabinet-making.
