A PAIR OF FINE GEORGE II SILVER CUPS AND COVERS
LONDON, 1744, MAKER'S MARK OF JOHN HUGH LE SAGE

Each of campana form on spreading circular base cast and chased with spiral rocaille and applied with a band of rosettes, the lower part of the body chased with spiral fluting with panels of overlapping waves between and applied above with grapevine, with two flaring loop handles headed by tied reed, the domed covers with similar chasing and egg and dart borders, surmounted bya grapevine finial, the bases and covers engraved with the Royal arms, crown, and Garter motto, the bases and cover flanges later engraved F & C under a Baron's coronet, marked under bases and on covers, both with scratch weights and 97-5,--14 1/2in.(37cm.) high

The initials and coronet are those of Lord Fauconberg and Conyers.


An identical cup and cover by the same, 1774, were sold by Christie's, London, March 7, 1990, lot 159. A similar cup and cover, apparently by James Schruder, was sold at Christie's from the Collection of Sir Lionel Faudel-Phillips, Bt., June 12, 1941, and was also in the Daily Telegraph Exhibition in 1928.
