A TACHIKANAGUSHI TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1650)

The thick shakudo plate is carved as a forty-seven-petal chrysanthemum. The hitsu-ana seem to be original--height 8.1cm., width 7.7cm., thickness 4.75mm.

The marks on either side of the central opening (nakago-ana) of this tsuba are typical of the Saotome school; the plate, however, is shakudo rather than the iron characteristic of Saotome work.
