Private John York was born in Leicester and joined the 1st Battalion, 14th Foot from the Reserve in September 1804, aged 16 years. Subsequently engaged in the Java operations, he appears on the Muster Master's Index of Casualties as being 'Sent to England' on 3.4.1812 (P.R.O. WO25/1237 refers).
