Company Sergeant-Major W. Selves was awarded the French Mdaille Militaire for bravery in the action at St. Ghislain on the Mons Canal on 23.8.1914 (Army Order 466 of 1914 refers). A withering fire from the Royal West Kents cost the 2nd Brandenburg Grenadiers 500 casualties.
