Private William Payton, aged 25 years, from Kidderminster was killed in action on 24.10.1914 at Polygon Wood and is buried in Perth (China Wall) Cemetery, Zillebeke. On the 24th the 7th Division lost and recaptured Polygon Wood. In the dense underbrush east of the race course, the 2nd Worcesters suddenly came on the Germans face to face at close range, so close that they could fire only from the hip before lunging into bayonet and hand to hand fighting and dispersing the enemy.
