Lance-Corporal John Frederick Brookes, aged 18 years, from Dudley, Worcestershire was killed in action on 10.8.1915 in the Battle of Sari Bair, Gallipoli and is commemorated on the Cape Helles Memorial. The Turks attacked the 9th Battalion's position near the 'Farm' at dawn on 10 August after rolling bombs down the hill which exploded in the forward trenches. The Battalion held its ground against attack after attack for three hours before being forced to retire to the head of the ravine.
