A PAIR OF ORMOLU CHENETS
In the manner of Francois Remond
Each with a female herm with trailing hair holding a torch, the lower body wrapped with an acanthus-leaf scroll issuing foliate sprays and with elaborate vine-wrapped foliate scroll to the back, the base with beaded moulding and fluted sides with leaf and berry patera flanking a tasseled drape, with conforming drape to either end, on acanthus- wrapped and spirally-fluted toupie feet, each stamped 'C953B&C, and 'C257B..'

With their vine-wrapped acanthus leaf issuing from a herm, these chenets relate to the design by François Rémond of circa 1780 for a pair of 'Feux Lamballe' executed for Marie-Thérèse, Prinzessin von Lamballe (H. Ottomeyer /P. Pröschel et. al, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 279, fig. 4.12.3).
