《血缘:大家庭》系列画作以蓝调忧郁的笔触描绘拘谨冷漠的人物,以单人、双人或一组的模式出现,探索身份的概念,以及关于家庭和历史的温存记忆。
1958年,张晓刚出生于中国昆明,童年大部分时光在文化大革命中度过。父母在他年幼时被送去劳教,1976年张晓刚高中毕业后亦被送去偏远地区“上山下乡”。
一年后,随着毛泽东时代的结束,张晓刚考入知名的四川美术学院,期间接触到西方艺术史和文艺复兴时期、后印象派乃至超现实主义的大师杰作。从他于1980年代创作的《圣母子像》(1989年作)中可见其初期创作理念如何融汇十九至二十世纪各艺术运动中不同大师的美学。
1990年代,张晓刚的创作回归自我探寻和个人历史。1992年他首次到访欧洲,亲眼目到他一直以来钦佩的西方艺术名作,更坚定了自己作为中国艺术家的创作决心。随后,他最具代表性的《血缘》系列作品在第46届威尼斯双年展的意大利馆「我相与他相︰三位中国艺术家」展览中亮相。
2020年12月,《血缘—大家庭2号》(1995年作)在佳士得以12,646,903美元的高价拍出,刷新张晓刚世界拍卖纪录。画作中一对夫妇怀抱黄色男婴,三人之间延绵缠绕红色细线。
《血缘》系列面世近十载后,张晓刚于2000年代开始创作《失忆与记忆》系列,尽管此系列作品所用技法与《血缘》相似,但画作着重捕捉主角面部特写,进一步探究人物内心复杂情感。
2009年,澳大利亚布里斯班昆士兰艺术博物馆为张晓刚举办回顾展「张晓刚:灵魂上的影子」,颂扬其三十年创作历程。
