Jean Martin Charcot joined the Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris in 1862 in order to continue his work with patients suffering from seizure and a malady he designated as hysteria. In 1882, he worked with Albert Londe recording patients at the hospital. During 1885-86 Sigmund Freud was an intern at the hospital, where he studied the phenomenon of hysteria under Charcot's instruction.
