A Staffordshire slipware owl-jug and cover
18th Century
Of lead-glazed red earthenware slip-decorated in cream and brown, the cover modelled as the owl's head with dark brown eyes set in wide cream sockets edged with dot borders beneath a raised ridge crest, the oviform body with allover scrambled combed decoration, the reverse with a short protruding tail below a loop handle, modelled perched on a circular waisted socle with two three-clawed feet (the cover with two slight cracks to rim and a restored section to back, very minor chipping and glaze flaking to cover and jug)
