The reverse has a poetic inscription
For two other Ma bottles painted with three goats see Sotheby's, New York, Fine Chinese Snuff Bottles, November 3, 1982, lot 253; and Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc., Fine Snuff Bottles From The Collection of Mrs. Elmer A. Claar, May 12, 1970, lot 452 (dated 1899)
The subject is one which appears only occasionally in the Ma repertoire (also painted by his nephew, Ma Shao-xien), but is usually fairly crudely painted. This, however, is one of his finest examples
The rebus formed by the three goats, San Yang Kai Tai can be read as spring comes in its full form (suggesting auspicious beginning to a new year)
